Thank you to Andrew Wadsworth for this race report from Ironbridge Half Marathon.
My second attempt at this race organised by Telford Harriers, previously having run it in 2024, and planned to repeat it last year, however entry to Ashby 20 prevented that, it would appear that they share the same date in the race calendar. One other factor in common, they both sell out early, but thankfully both operate a waiting list which was how I found myself on the starting line.
The course can only be described as interesting, starting in Telford town park, running to Ironbridge crossing the River Severn twice and returning back to the starting point. Ironbridge being by the river is closer to sea level than the lofty heights of Telford which means 245m of ascent, with a particular challenge just after eight miles leaving the riverfront in Ironbridge and turning up Station Rd. This is also an unusual section as it is the only section of note on road, through the centre of Ironbridge pavements are used but I would estimate over 80% is off-road although much of that is on the well surfaced Silkin Way (some of which used to be a Great Western railway line & is now a cycle path), or hardcore trail paths, no danger of getting brightly coloured road running shoes muddy!
The main interest though are the number of historic industrial sites the route passes, including running across the historic bridge in Ironbridge which attracts a sizeable number of encouraging spectators. Previously to the bridge you pass the Victorian town at Blists Hill, and the Coalport China museum, and after the bridge the route bypasses the museum of Iron.

Four water points were well staffed by the Telford Harriers team, and countless offers of sweets were available should one wish to partake. A quality t-shirt was provided at the end alongside a bottle of beer, chocolate and crisps, plus the offer of a free glass of Prosecco from a local sponsor, although I failed to avail myself of this.

Would I recommend it? Absolutely, but be sure to enter early to guarantee your place. It is never going to be a PB course but for history and visual appeal I have never experienced a half quite like it.
Time wise I clocked 1hr 46min 14secs and finished third in my age category (about 13 minutes behind the category winner who crossed the line 37th overall - well run sir!)
The short video below taken on the day by drone & bicycle provides a great overview of the occasion.
